Little Child's Size Couch Sitting by the Curb

A couple weeks ago my neighbor put a child's size couch out at the curb. I just happened to look outside in the morning as my son was walking his dog when I saw the it sitting next to a BIG clunky TV. Of course it didn't dawn on me to even look closer at the couch then. Later in the afternoon I was out watering the grass when I looked over at the couch again, but this time I actually thought "hey I should check this out better". So I put the hose down and went for a look see. When I got closer I saw that it was in really good condition (except the paw prints of dirt from my son's dog where he had jumped on it).
Of course my brain took awhile to get to figure out that "I can sell this!" But when it finally clicked into that gear, I must have looked pretty funny. I picked up one end thinking it would be pretty easy to carry, well it wasn't really heavy, just awkward, so I went to the side yard to get the dolly and brought it over to the couch. Here's the chuckling part, I lifted it up on its end, but I forgot the cushions and they fell out of the couch so I put them back in and then put the extra cushions on top. Of course they kept falling, so I'm thinking if anyone is watching this they must be chuckling to themselves, watching me bend over several times to pick up cushions when I could have put them under my arm, such a dingbell I am!
So I got it to the driveway and cleaned the dirt off from the dog and realized it has no rips, tears or holes.

I quickly measured and photographed it and got it on craigslist. Thinking I had gold, I started it at $110 but after several days of crickets chirping I changed the price to $90. After several emails asking me to go down to $50 (maybe I didn't have gold)
I waited patiently and got a couple of phone calls, one from a lady that said her son's teacher was requesting a couch for her classroom at school. So she got another parents husband to bring his truck over to pick up the couch. After said husband pulled up to the driveway where I had brought the couch out to our porch, he looked it over carefully (as he was probably instructed to do) not wanting him to get in trouble when he got home, I made sure he looked underneath to see there were no rips. He felt it was in perfect condition too. So my grandson helped him carry it over to the truck (not as comical as when I brought it home) and proceeded to give me the $90. All was well as we waved to him speeding off around the corner.
Then I started to think "I need to get better at being observant", when I'm out driving I need to pay attention to the side of the road. After I brought the couch home I noticed later that day that the trash company came over to pick up the TV and bring it to the dump or recycling, not sure what they do with it, but they were going to take the couch too. So I feel good about "Saving" this couch from the landfill.

Have you "Saved" something from the landfill? Leave a comment to tell us your story.

Name Your Poison! Who would want these?

One day while walking through my Goodwill I was scanning over the dishware section and a nice man started talking to me about shopping there. He was breezing around looking for something specific and going on about how he had put his item in a spot so no one would find it, when he asked me if I saw the coupons on the back of the donation paper they gave out now. Well I hadn't seen these yet, so he said he had an extra one and he would get me one, but before he left he held up a glass from the other side of the shelving and said to me, "Name your poison? Then he proceeded to read me the names on the glasses.
    Cyanide
    Hemlock
    Arsenic
    Curare
    Strychnine
    Belladonna
After reading the names he said  I don't think I would feel safe drinking out of those glasses! Who would buy these? Being polite I said yeah I don't think I would feel safe drinking out of those glasses either! He then made some other comments and said he would be back to give me that coupon.
Meanwhile my friend wandered around to me and I told her about the nice man and how he was bringing me a coupon. We continued looking at the dishes and the man came back just as promised with the coupon, I thanked him and we chatted for a minute. He left and as I came around the shelving I started looking over the glassware items and came upon those glasses he was reading me the names, my friend said "They would probably sell as a gag gift on eBay"  (I can't believe nothing sparked in my brain when he read them) Having old eyes I can't quite read the fine print on the label that say's what brand it is. Then I started to wonder "How much will these go for on eBay?" So whipping out the handy dandy phone with the app I looked it up. Lo and behold these were selling for a lot of money. As quick as I could I put them in my basket.
When I went to the checkout line the man was there paying for his stadium seats (which by the way sell pretty good on eBay too) Wellll he happened to look over into my basket and see the glasses. He laughed and said "So you got those glasses?" I said yeah my friend thought they would be a good gag gift.

When I got them back to the Serendipity Warehouse I get the old magnifying glass out and see that it says "Neiman Marcus", Okay I did have a quickening of my heart rate now. I quickly got them on at a fixed price of $149.99, I only paid $3.60 for 6 glasses, they didn't have the stir sticks or I would have put them on for more. They were higher then any other auction or fixed price. They sold in a week.

Boy how about that, if the man hadn't read that to me I might not have thought to look them up. Have you ever had one of those moments where you just didn't think? Thank goodness I had something click in my brain to be curious. Tell me about your "didn't think" moment.

Clean hair anyone?!

A while back I was out hunting searching for treasures to put in my shoppe, it was getting late in yard sale hours, about noonish, I came upon a box of new packets of shampoo and conditioner. Well this sparked my interest as I know beauty products can be a super good seller. When I asked how much they would take for the whole box the daughter said they would take $10, but me being the professional negotiator that I am, I couldn't pay full price. I offered $5. I could see the daughter was about to say yes, when (darn) she asked mom (it was mom's things) of course mom wasn't going to go so low, she still had a bit of an attachment to them. So she said she would take $8, I felt that was fair so I whipped out the dollars and strengthened my muscles bringing the box to my car.
After bringing it home I proceeded to sort and count all the packets, all totaled there was:

92 Formulas by Ecoly Papaya Dry Hair Shampoo
88 Healthy Sexy Hair Pumpkin Potion Leave in Conditioner
86 Healthy Sexy Hair Color Safe Soy Milk Shampoo
50 Formulas by Ecoly Sage Weightless Conditioner & Detangler
94 Healthy Sexy Hair Pumpkin Rehydrating Shampoo
They were about .019, not quite .02 cents each.

Into gallon size Ziploc bags they went, to keep things under control while waiting to sell these little treasures. I had time to only put the Healthy Sexy Hair Pumpkin Rehydrating Shampoo on ~ Had them on at 6 for $9.99. Sold them 6 for $5.15. Why did I go down so much you might ask, well here's the greatest part about offering free shipping, when someone from another country buys the item they have to pay the shipping cost to their country. This particular buyer was very smart, she emailed me asking if I would come down on the price and she would buy all 13 items that I had on. This was a no-brainer so I quickly replied sure and told her $5.15 per item. I also searched the Ziploc bag and found that I had 2 more lots of 6 so I told her and she bought those too. When all the packets settled, so far I have sold 15 lots for $77.25. So with $8 spent I already have a $69.25 profit and I have now added the rest to my shoppe and "yeah" just sold one lot of the Healthy Sexy Hair Pumpkin Potion Leave in Conditioner,
for a total of $80.24 profit and the best part is I still have oodles of packets to sell.

I love to ask the garage sale host to give me a total for the whole box when they have a lot of the same item, they usually want to get rid of it so they almost always throw a price out that is pretty reasonable. Don't you just love box's that keep giving?!?! I'd love to hear about your boxes that were a score, please leave a comment!

What Goodwill???

I have been a yard sale shopper since I was a child. My dad would go down the alleys behind homes in the valley and pick up enough things to bring to the swap meet. (did I just say "swap meet" oh no, my age is showing, there hasn't been a swap meet for many, many, many years now, make that one more many!)  Anyway he taught me at a young age the art of negotiating, he was the king of negotiating and he knew a little about everything. So I am by proxy a pretty seasoned picker. Around the time eBay came about my dad really wanted me to start selling on there, he said it seemed like a pretty easy place to sell, he just didn't want to figure out how to do it. Well neither did I back then.
Fast forward to June of 2000 and I finally signed up, but just to check it out and maybe buy something here or there. I just couldn't waste the time it would take me to figure out how to sell on eBay, so I just kept selling in my dad's antique store for a year more. Then about a couple of months after my dad passed away I thought I should really figure this out. Well what a dummy I was it was pretty easy. My dad would have loved selling on eBay! I learned a valuable lesson, take the time to read the instructions.
I sold the odd item here and there during the years. Now let's fast forward again, it's December 2010 and I have my grandson over for a week and he's slightly bored as any 8 year old get's, so we go out to a few yard sales and I found him quite a few trinkets that young boys like to play with.
Well as we are driving down a main street I noticed that there is a Goodwill, as we are sliding around a corner to whip into the parking lot I am thinking to myself "I have lived in this city since I was 6 years old, how did I not know we had a Goodwill here, where have I been all these years". So I leave the boy and papa in the car as I take a quick walk through just to see what they have. Low and behold I found a brand new cookie sheet that I needed since mine looked about a hundred years old. I figured I better hurry and finish as the "boys" will be getting restless soon. So I scamper over to the checkout line, as I'm standing there I happen to look over at the rack with purses hanging on it, kinda in the way of the checkout line.
Sooooo as I'm looking at these purses I see a leather bag that reminds me of one I saw on Seinfeld. Now if you are a Seinfeld fan you will know right away which one I am talking about. Remember Kramer betting on the airplane arrivals and departures?? Yeah that one, when Newman came to the airport he had a leather mail bag, that bag reminded me of the one I was looking at. Okay so I flip the flap up, it says J. Peterman, my heart skipped a beat I knew this was an expensive item. I rubbed the leather and thought and thought but seeing the $7.99 sticker I was still in yard sale mode, so I put it back. (what was I thinking?!?!?!)

I then went back to the car after paying, all the way home I kept thinking how much could that sell on eBay for. After impatiently waiting for the computer to turn on, I looked up the bag and oh my! The auctions were going as high as $235. On the J. Peterman site the bag sells for over $400. My heart now started to race so fast, I couldn't get in the car fast enough and get back to GW, all the while I was saying over and over "Please be there, please be there." As I sprinted into the GW I turned and gazed upon "The Bag" (cue the bright light coming down from heaven with the angels singing "Hallelujah") .

I let out a huge sigh of relief that I'm sure everyone around could hear. So as I'm waiting in line again to pay I have a lady say she liked the bag and how much was it? I felt like a cartoon character clutching the bag and saying, mine, mine, mine. So I told her and she just nodded saying that was a good deal, little did she know how good!
After getting it on eBay the auction ended and it sold for $210, I realized the auction ended on the 26th, so everyone was done shopping for gifts, but I still made a tidy profit of $202.
BIG LESSON learned ~ Call someone to check the price on eBay! (This was before the smart phone)

Now I just look it up myself on my smart phone and I will never pass up a "good deal" because I hesitated. Have you ever left something then later realized what a mistake that was? Tell me about your item that almost got away story...
